Save the Date: On #GivingTuesday 2017, we are going to #FixTheFarm!

SAVE THE DATE: NOVEMBER 28, 2017. Thanksgiving is upon us, followed quickly by Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But the greatest day this fall holiday season is #GivingTuesday. Started in 2013. #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.

#GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many of us are focused on the holidays and year-end giving. It is a movement of individuals around the world who are committed to making our world a better place. What could be more inspiring than nonprofits from around the globe coming together for one day to raise awareness and funds to further the work they are doing? And what organization could be better to support this year than our very own Carolina Poodle Rescue?!

This #GivingTuesday, Carolina Poodle Rescue's fundraising efforts will be focused on one very important area: helping to #FixTheFarm! And what an opportunity we have. Consider the numbers: over 3,000 members of our Friends & Family group. More than 10,000 followers on our Facebook page. An average reach of more than 7,000 for each of our posts. This is a LOT of online reach!

#GivingTuesday is a day focused on giving. Giving means many things, not just money. The Fairy Dogmother and Fairy Dogfather have identified an ambitious list of projects that we want to tackle as we #FixTheFarm. These will take money, time, and volunteer resources to achieve. Check out the list below for just a few of our #FixTheFarm wish list items:

    •    Re-roof Greta's Cottage: A 1-day project requiring 4 volunteers
    •    Install Gutters and Floodlights on the Main Building: A 2-day project requiring 4 volunteers who aren't afraid of heights
    •    Paint the New Storage Trailer: A 1-day project requiring 6 to 8 volunteers
    •    Add A Handicap Accessible Deck to the Adoption Center: A 2-day project requiring 4 to 6 volunteers

So how can you help? There are SO MANY WAYS!

    •    Tell your friends, family, coworkers, etc. about Carolina Poodle Rescue
    •    Share our #GivingTuesday social media posts with your online networks
    •    Set aside $5 of your Black Friday / Cyber Monday shopping money for #GivingTuesday and designate it to help #FixTheFarm
    •    Sign up to participate in a #FixTheFarm project (sign-up info coming soon)
    •    Financially sponsor a #FixTheFarm project
    •    Partner up with friends or family to sponsor a #FixTheFarm project OR create a team workday around a project (or both!)
    •    Come out to the farm and love on some dogs - they can never get too many snuggles!

Every day, more animals are in need. Our farm allows us to say yes. We have an incredible facility that can only improve through the generosity and support of our volunteers and donors. Together, we will hit our #FixTheFarm goals!

SOS Feature: Giving Thanks

Thanksgiving is always a season of reflection and thanks for the gifts received during the year, for friendships and family, for the challenges overcome, and lessons  learned, for compassion and generosity and hope. While there are many blessings, one that we are the most thankful for is the gift of Carolina Poodle Rescue and the joy it brings to our homes. For our SOS team, we are especially thankful for this program that allows us to save senior and special needs lives.

This November, we would like to offer our heartfelt THANKS to our dedicated and generous supporters who make our SOS program possible. It takes a village. It takes dedicated staff who love our SOS babies every day. It takes generous donors and volunteers who allow us to say yes when we ask. It takes safe and warm facilities where seniors and special needs dogs can call home. It takes foster families and adopters who are willing to open their homes and hearts to these special dogs.

Because of you, we have grown from a humble start supporting 5 senior dogs to a robust program supporting over 60 dogs (and growing!). We have expanded from a sanctuary at Dreamweaver Farms to a network of loving foster homes that extend our efforts and allow us to grow our program. We are building a strong reputation as a caring partner and go-to resource for shelters, families, and other rescues.

As we prepare for a new year, our SOS program is gearing up for growth. We expect our program to grow to supporting 100 dogs in 2018! 100 senior and special needs dogs living their days under the loving care of Carolina Poodle Rescue. 100 senior and special needs dogs given a chance at a forever family. 100 senior and special needs dogs who will depend on US!

Thank You. Because of you senior dogs are sleeping in warm beds instead of scary shelters. Because of you families are experiencing the pure joy that senior dogs bring. Because of you special needs dogs are learning to walk in wheelchairs, playing in playpens, and enjoying the warm sun through their very own cabana. Because of you, lives are saved!

If you aren't involved with our SOS program but would like to be, we would love to have you!! Please check out our website (www.cprsos.org) and read the stories of our SOS babies. If one speaks to your heart, please email cprsosdogs@carolinapoodlerescue.org to say YES to supporting one of our dogs. $20/month helps us save precious lives and say YES to seniors and special needs dogs in need!

xoxo,
Your SOS Team

Join Us for A Winter's Tail

You are cordially invited to begin your holiday season with a relaxing afternoon of fun, food and drink, music, and the warm hospitality of a unique home in the southern countryside, and supporting a worthwhile cause.

The Nicholson Mansion at Fairforest Plantation, home of Dr. Patrick and Lynn Mornane, is opening its doors to CPR friends, new and old, for a very special start to the holiday season. The benefit is a chance to begin your holiday by relaxing and enjoying yourself in a genteel, refined setting while supporting a unique animal rescue that does things differently than the rest.

We have a full afternoon of activities for our guests including tours of the mansion (featuring 12 trees decorated for the Christmas season), heavy hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar with beer and wine. You will have a chance to learn the history of this grand old home, one of the hidden treasures of South Carolina.

Proceeds from this benefit go to support the work of Carolina Poodle Rescue at Dreamweaver Farms, a no kill animal sanctuary in upstate South Carolina. CPR takes in poodles and other dogs from shelters and from owners who can no longer care for them. We offer both medical and behavioral rehabilitation, long term sanctuary and, when and if the right home is found, rehoming. If no home is found, we are their final home. No animal is ever euthanized for space, only if there is no quality of life left for us to give them.

When - Saturday, December 2 - 4 PM to 7 PM
Where - Nicholson Mansion at Fairforest Plantation
2403 Crosskeys Highway - State Road 49 - Union, SC 29379

Tickets: For a donation of $30 or more, you will receive one (1) complimentary entrance to our Winter's Tail and Tour event. Please RSVP and let us know you are coming!

2017 Carolina Poodle Rescue Reunion Recap

It was a beautiful fall day for the reunion this year. Not too much wind, the weather was cool in the morning and mild in the day. A group of over 200 gathered at Dreamweaver farms with their dogs to enjoy each other, the fabulous CPR staff, and all of the festivities. CPR adopters and alum came from far away and nearby to attend. The attendee who came the farthest was Joan Christensen with her three beautiful standard poodles--all CPR rescues--who drove down from Canada! Old friends caught up and new friends were made--by people and dogs alike.

Dennis and Melinda Horn outdid themselves again with planning and making the reunion great! Large tents were set up for food and above lunch tables. Melinda cooked all of the chicken and veggie burgers on the grill while the side dishes were set out for self-service along with an array of desserts. All of the food was delicious. As an added touch, the lunch tables were decorated with Halloween decor and featured dishes of grain-free dog biscuits for the canine attendees.

The day started off with the Blessing of the Animals. Sherry Wilson put together an extra special blessing this year with retired minister Judy Stevens (who is
also an approved adopter) to do the official blessing and with Debbie Bennett to lead the song. The SOS dogs received the first blessing of the day.

The new CPR mobile adoption RV--nicknamed MACkenzie--was set up for tours to show how it will comfortably transport and house CPR dogs and staff and volunteers to adoption events.

Attendees received ticket stubs for prize give aways throughout the day. Beth Jansce organized and ran the silent auction. And the lucky winner of the Barkwells Raffle was Sharon Matchette! Kennel tours were given and SOS dogs got to meet some of their sponsors

Topping off the day was the Halloween costume contest for people and dogs alike. The competition was fierce and the judges had some hard decisions to make. The winners were:

  • First Place - S.S. Poodle group costume
  • Second Place - Poop Patrol
  • Third Place - Mexican Chihuahuas
Many thanks to Dennis and Melinda Horn for all of their hard work to make it a fantastic day. Thank you to Donna and Wayne Ezzell and to all of the CPr staff for hosting. If you weren't able to make it this year, we hope to see you next year! Mark your calendar for October and join us!

Feature Pet of the Month

Carol and Hershel are a package deal! Carol is blind and Hershel provides her with support. They are two of the cutest and sweetest little poodles you have every seen! They are both snuggle bugs and love to sit in laps. Despite Carol's vision issues, she is a very grounded and happy girl. She walks a little slowly because she can't see. Hershel is outgoing and keeps an eye out for Carol. Both of these dogs came to an adoption event in Durham recently and did great with all of the volunteers that they hadn't met before and with the other dogs.

How did Carol and Hershel end up in rescue? Their owner was moving and wasn't able to take them with her. We estimate that they are both around 7 to 8 years old, which in poodle years is the prime of life!

Because of Carol's vision problems, the ideal home for this fantastic pair would be adults only. A single story home would be helpful as well. Both Carol and Hershel love to lay in the sun and would be so happy to greet their new person or people when they come home. Their sweet faces would be a cheering sight!

If you are interested in Carol and Hershel, please visit our adoption application page.

2018 Carolina Poodle Rescue Calendar Available!

We held our annual Calendar Photo Contest this year. The top 12 winners are in the "calendar monthly spread". We had some wonderful pictures of dogs to choose from. It was really difficult for our judges! Every photo submitted is in the calendar either as a winner for the month or in a thumbnail located throughout the calendar. They make wonderful holiday gifts. You can order online and they will also be available at the Reunion.

Ongoing Fundraisers

Triangle area CPR folks! As a fundraiser for Luna's Legacy, Sharon Durham and Mark Beckett are selling the GoPlaySave 2018 coupon books. We hope you will consider purchasing one of these books for yourself or as a gift. Perhaps you know someone who would like to purchase one?

CPR gets $12 on one Raleigh book and $10 on one Durham/Chapel Hill book, so this is an amazing deal for everyone!

For example, one coupon is for up to $25 off an entree at Bonefish Grill. That coupon alone almost covers the cost! Raleigh books are $30 and the Durham/Chapel Hill books are $25. Here are more details on the coupons. https://www.goplaysavetriangle.com/merchants.

Please contact Sharon Durham (919-264-7262) or Mark Beckett (803-467-5008) if you are interested. Thank you!

Fred and Jeri Abrams have adopted multiple rescue dogs and are advocates and supporters of Carolina Poodle Rescue where they adopted their current dogs. Their goal is to connect with young people and convince them that adopting a rescue is preferable to buying a pet shop or puppy mill dog. This is their second book about a CPR dog. The first is Rusty--the Little Red Dog.

Pogo--the Puppy Mill Dog (A Rescue Tale) is the true story of a cock-a-poo rescued from a puppy mill by a rescue shelter and adopted into her forever home. Pogo had serious health problems that were overcome by the rescue shelter. The book follows Pogo's experiences at the puppy mill, at the rescue shelter, and in her forever home. The authors hope that the book will encourage parents and children to adopt a rescue dog rather than buy a puppy mill or pet shop dog. All profits from sales go to Carolina Poodle Rescue (www.CarolinaPoodleRescue.org) who rescued her and arranged for her heart surgery.

Upcoming Events

Come out and support Carolina Poodle Rescue and tell all your friends, too! Even if you can help out for just a few hours at one event, it is a tremendous help! And spread the word about Carolina Poodle Rescue!

Volunteers are needed to help educate people about Carolina Poodle Rescue and the adoption of pets. If you have a CPR foster dog, this is a great opportunity for your foster to browse potential forever families and find the best one for them! Many people think "rescue" dogs were given up because they are "bad" or damaged dogs. They don't always realize how much difference a good home can make and that a lot of the dogs have just had bad luck (perhaps an owner became sick, lost job, etc.). We can show them what wonderful companions are available through rescue. All you need to bring is a chair and a great attitude to share with others! Come prepared for inside or outside depending on the event you are attending.

Please contact the event coordinator if you would like to volunteer or have a foster or two or more to bring!

Do you have a story about a Carolina Poodle Rescue dog that you'd like us to publish? Have you read a book or watched a movie about dogs or dog training that you'd like to review or share?

Please send your stories and/or reviews to newsletter@carolinapoodlerescue.org as well as a photo or photos to go with the story.

Tell 5 friends!?Check Carolina Poodle Rescue out on our Facebook page.

Can you tell 5 friends about CPR? Can you Facebook or Twitter a link to our web page? The power of networking is unlimited. Telling 5 friends, and asking them to tell 5 friends, is the best way to reach many people and tell them about the animal rescue, small but determined to make a difference.? Thank you!

Patrons are our lifeline -- our patrons keep CPR going. Patrons are not only assisting CPR, they are assisting themselves by earning money off their next adoption. For more information on how to become a patron, please email donna@carolinapoodlerescue.org.

When you shop on Amazon, you can also help CPR. Amazon Smile operates EXACTLY like Amazon.com including using the same userid and password. You can designate CPR as your charity and Amazon will donate a percentage of your purchases, behind the scenes, to CPR. It does not change your purchase price.

The site says: "Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible Amazon Smile purchases to the charitable organization of your choice", that is the purchase price you pay, excluding taxes. It's a really easy way for your regular shopping to help CPR!

One of the best ways to help poodles in need that lets you do it from home is to be an adoption counselor. Do you have 2 to 4 hours per week to give? Do you have an unlimited phone plan? Do you have Word? Do you enjoy talking to other dog-friendly people on the phone? Do you have good instincts about people? If so - adoption counselor work may be for you. For more information, email Sherry Wilson at poodles4ever@bellsouth.net.

With pet health care quality now approaching the same level as human care, there are more options available for the pet owner than ever before. Unfortunately, those options can be expensive. Who wants to make the decision between a few dollars and their beloved companion?

Trupanion offers the only 90% coverage plan for covered items. That's right - 90% coverage with no limit after your deductible is met. 90%. That is the most comprehensive health care plan in the industry.

Carolina Poodle Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Donations are tax-deductible.

Our Mission:
To rescue, rehabilitate, offer permanent sanctuary and, when appropriate, rehome needy poodles and small dogs.

To encourage the human-animal bond by promoting activities that serve to bring animals and their people closer together.

To support the efforts of those in the animal rescue community seeking to end euthanasia as a means of population control.
