Gracie Ellen

Gracie Ellen spent the first 8 or 9 years of her life in a cage being a mama dog to many, many puppies. We think that when she was no longer a "good producer" of puppies, Gracie was dumped at a shelter. She did not know what it was like to be a special, loved and cherished dog.

Almost four years ago, she came to live with us. At first, she was sad and shy. But from the moment we brought her into our home, we began treating her like a princess, and she learned how to be a princess very fast! It wasn't long before she began to enjoy being with us, learned to wag her tail, cuddled on the couch or the bed, learned how it felt to have enough good food to eat, get treats for just being her and playing with her brother, Beauregard.

Gracie now has bright happy eyes, a beautiful creamy coat, a smiling face and an elegant figure. She also has many unusual habits. She cocks her head to the side to watch you when she walks on a leash. When she is excited (going for rides in the car is her favorite), she jumps up with all four feet clearing the ground--yes, even at her age she can do this!

Gracie has that very special "Poodley" dancing gait that just makes you smile to see; so proud and feminine. She claims a certain end of the couch as her own, and if someone sits there, she circles the room until her message is received, and the interloper moves off her spot! She gets very scared when thunder and lightning come, but her Thundershirt seems to calm her.

Her funniest, strangest habit is purring! She purrs! Rubbing her ears will elicit these loud vibrations. It is amazing to hear because I have never known a dog to purr; have you? Here is a picture of our beautiful girl. Her gorgeousness is a crowd pleaser and a show stopper. When people comment on her beauty, I love to tell her admirers that she is from Carolina Poodle Rescue. Folks seem amazed and confounded that a "rescued dog" can be this pretty, smart and well-mannered. I don't usually tell folks about her purring habit. It is hard enough to believe that this gorgeous, smiling, gentle Standard Poodle girl is from rescue, that I don't want to diminish my credibility by telling folks that she purrs!

Happy Tails

by Maggie Salter

Hi! I want to tell you about the most amazing Christmas present I received.

On December 5th, I was adopted by a lady who had recently lost her 12 year old poodle. It was a big transition for me because I had to move all the way to NC and it was a really long ride. At first I was very shy and a little scared about my new surroundings because I'm blind in one eye, but I didn't need to worry. My Mom has been really good about showing me where everything is so I hardly bump into furniture or doors. I learned right away where my food and water are, and I have two beds to sleep in during the day and at night I snuggle in bed with my Mom. She holds me real tight and gives me lots of kisses before we go to sleep.

When I first got to North Carolina the weather was nice and warm and we got to take lots of walks, but then it turned cold and windy so I don't like being outside so much now. Not to worry, my Mom bought me a whole wardrobe for Christmas. I got new coats, sweaters and sweatshirts for the cold days and little harness dresses and t-shirts for the warmer days to come. Boy, I can't believe all the clothes I have --- a whole dresser drawer full. Every morning I get to put on a new outfit and I can tell all the dogs in my neighborhood are jealous! Dressing up is sooo much fun! I even have a bright yellow raincoat and I've put that to good use these last few weeks with all the rain we've had!

I live in Beaufort, N.C. which is down on the coast, just a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean. I've only been downtown on the boardwalk to see all the boats once, but there were a lot of people and I was afraid I was going to get stepped on. Now I use a pink stroller which used to belong to my big sister Lacey. I just love to ride up and down the sidewalks and talk to everyone. Mom really likes to shop and now I do too! Mom keeps telling me to wait for Spring -- we are really going to have fun when the weather is warm and the days are long! Boy, I'm ready. I'm really not a fan of winter!

I've enjoyed sharing my new life with you. I really did get the best Christmas present I could ever wish for.

I love my Mom so much and she loves me too! We were absolutely meant to be together. She told me that the minute she saw my picture on Facebook, she knew I was the one. I'm not really sure what Facebook is, but I'm sure glad she saw my picture there! I'll let you know what the Easter Bunny brings!

Love and Kisses,

Maggie

P.S. I especially love my new Vet and Groomer - they're the best! Boy, life is really, really good! I hope all my friends at the Farm find a wonderful home with a great Mom just like I did.

Do you have a story to share or an update? We'd love to include it in a newsletter! It doesn't have to be long; just a quick update and a photo would be great. Please send it to newsletter@carolinapoodlerescue.org.
S.O.S. Update

On behalf of the S.O.S. program, welcome 2016! What is S.O.S. you ask? It is CPR's program dedicated to the seniors and special needs babies at the farm. On the outside we are frequently known as the "old guys" or the "troubled guys", but here, under the loving care of CPR, we are just part of the gang. Some might even say we are the cool gang. We have the softest beds, the special foods, the most delicious treats, and some of the kindest caregivers.

Here to welcome in a new year is our beautiful boy Stark. Stark joined our SOS gang in early 2014. After being hit by a car and recovering at the Greenville shelter, he needed a safe place to rest and recover and Dreamweaver Farms was the perfect match. We quickly discovered that our handsome boy, while only 5 years young, was very quiet. He prefers days spent lounging in his bed or sunbathing and taking in the world around him to the normal rustle and bustle of farm life. You see, Stark is special. He is mostly blind. Yes, this can make him timid around new things and new people. We don't blame him for this. We believe this makes him uniquely alert and attentive to voices and sounds. Thanks to CPR, Stark now knows what kindness sounds like. He understands how compassion feels.

While Stark has blossomed as part of our gang, he'd love to be the leader of his own gang. He isn't big on a kennel but would love a loving home whose sounds can become the music in his heart. On behalf of Stark and all the SOS babies, THANK YOU for every opportunity you have afforded us. We love our donors and sponsors!

XOXO,
Your SOS Team

Feature Pet of the Month

Sunny is like his name--a sweet and happy guy. He was released by his owners to find a home that fits him better. He was much loved by his family and he loved his family very much too--so much that he guarded them from visitors to their house. His former family felt that Sunny needed a more experienced owner and that a quieter home would be a better match. They had several children and had neighbors and neighborhood kids in and out of the house all of the time. They searched hard for a rescue for Sunny as they wanted to make sure that he would be well cared for and find a wonderful new person or people.

Sunny is house trained, he walks (pretty well) on a leash, and is a dream in the car. A CPR volunteer transported him down to the farm and he was a perfect gentleman. Sweet and quiet, he laid down sometimes leaned over to give his transporter a kiss on the hand. Sunny looks a lot like a teddy bear and, when he plays, he makes noises sort of like a bear. He loves to play! At four years he has a lot of puppy left in him! He listens well, is smart, loves to play catch, does great at the dog park or with other dogs, and makes a great running partner. He also is a great snuggler.

In a quieter household, Sunny would do great. His new home should not have children. He needs someone willing to work with him to teach him that it's okay when people visit the house. The CPR volunteer who went to meet Sunny came with treats and Sunny came to greet her after she came in the house. He did great with her! He's smart and listens well. He would do great with additional training. He's eager to please his people and looks to them for approval.

Sunny needs to be on a grain free diet due to allergies. Otherwise, Sunny is a healthy guy. He's sad right now because he isn't with his family but he is a loving dog and would love to devote himself to another person or family of people.

If you are interested in Sunny, please visit our adoption application page.

Upcoming Events

Come out and support Carolina Poodle Rescue and tell all your friends, too! Even if you can help out for just a few hours at one event, it is a tremendous help!! And spread the word about Carolina Poodle Rescue!!

Volunteers are needed to help educate people about Carolina Poodle Rescue and the adoption of pets. If you have a CPR foster dog, this is a great opportunity for your foster to browse potential forever families and find the best one for them! Many people think "rescue" dogs were given up because they are "bad" or damaged dogs. They don't always realize how much difference a good home can make and that a lot of the dogs have just had bad luck (maybe an owner get sick, lose job, etc.). We can show them what wonderful companions are available through rescue. All you need to bring is a chair and a great attitude to share with others!! Come prepared for inside or outside depending on the event you are attending.

Please contact the event coordinator if you would like to volunteer or have a foster or 2 or more to bring!

Tell 5 friends!
Check Carolina Poodle Rescue out on our Facebook page.

Can you tell 5 friends about CPR? Can you Facebook or Twitter a link to our web page? The power of networking is unlimited. Telling 5 friends, and asking them to tell 5 friends, is the best way to reach many people and tell them about the animal rescue, small but determined to make a difference.
 Thank you!

Patrons are our lifeline -- our patrons keep CPR going. Patrons are not only assisting CPR, they are assisting themselves by earning money off their next adoption. For more information on how to become a patron, please email donna@carolinapoodlerescue.org.

When you shop on Amazon, you can also help CPR. Amazon Smile operates EXACTLY like Amazon.com including using the same userid and password. You can designate CPR as your charity and Amazon will donate a percentage of your purchases, behind the scenes, to CPR. It does not change your purchase price.

The site says: "Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to the charitable organization of your choice", that is the purchase price you pay, excluding taxes. It's a really easy way for your regular shopping to help CPR!

One of the best ways to help poodles in need that lets you do it from home is to be an adoption counselor. Do you have 2 to 4 hours per week to give? Do you have an unlimited phone plan? Do you have Word? Do you enjoy talking to other dog-friendly people on the phone? Do you have good instincts about people? If so - adoption counselor work may be for you. For more information, email Sherry Wilson at poodles4ever@bellsouth.net.

With pet health care quality now approaching the same level as human care, there are more options available for the pet owner than ever before. Unfortunately, those options can be expensive. Who wants to make the decision between a few dollars and their beloved companion?

Want to protect your wallet and your pet and help CPR at the same time? Go here -- and see if Trupanion has something to offer you.

Any time a web visitor clicks this custom link and applies for coverage, CPR earns $25. Trupanion offers the only 90% coverage plan for covered items. That's right - 90% coverage with no limit after your deductible is met. 90%. That is the most comprehensive health care plan in the industry.
