SOS Feature: Loving Seniors

Loving seniors and special needs is not for the faint of heart. The most obvious response to the idea of adopting one: you have them for too short a time. But this, my friends, is not what makes loving seniors and special needs such an incredible (and tough) expansion of your heart.

When you love a senior or special need dog, you must be open to be inspired every day. The dog in the wheelchair will try to walk on its own or your senior baby will catch a frisky wind and play like a 5-year-old. You will watch your baby defy odds and exceed expectations. And you'll be tempted to believe that they are fighting for you -- because they know your heart needs another day.

When you love a senior or special need dog, you must be open to being humbled. The resilience of a dog that has lost its vision or hearing due to age is incredible. Their ability to adjust is a valuable lesson in adaptability. The ability of a dog abandoned at an old age to love and trust another human is testament to forgiveness and redemption that many humans cannot imagine.

When you love a senior or special need dog, you must be willing to give them your whole heart. These are predominantly quiet babies whose primary desires are a warm bed and someone to show them tenderness and love. Their unconditional trust and respect and love for you will move you in the deepest ways.

Loving a senior or special need dog is the best gift you can give yourself. The gentle kisses, kindest eyes, comfortable nudges and happy tails make every short day worth the adventure. For the footprints they leave on our hearts are the grandest in size.

If you aren't involved with our SOS program but would like to be, we would love to have you!! Please check out our website (www.cprsos.org) and read the stories of our SOS babies. If one speaks to your heart, please email cprsosdogs@carolinapoodlerescue.org to say YES to supporting one of our dogs. $20/month helps us save precious lives and say YES to seniors and special needs dogs in need!

Thank you!
Your SOS team

Feature Pet of the Month

Little Sassy is only about a year old. She was transferred to Carolina Poodle Rescue from another rescue. While her name is Sassy, she is actually shy when she first meets someone new.

Sassy is a Rat Terrier Mix and is good with other dogs as well as with cats. She needs owners who are willing to work with her and how she is initially timid. She's also curious so she just needs someone to help build her confidence. She loves treats which will help a lot with training. She doesn't know any basic commands yet. She's afraid of leashes so needs someone to show her how much fun a walk with her person can be. Since she doesn't leash walk yet, having a fenced in yard would be useful for her new home to have.

She would thrive in a quiet home with a person or people for her to love. When she is comfortable with someone, she enjoys being petted and staying close. She will be a devoted companion!

If you are interested in Sassy, please visit our adoption application page.

Happy Tails!

In March 2016, many people in the Carolina Poodle Rescue community became involved with helping rescue two little poodles named Romeo and Juliette when they were surrendered to a shelter. Both Romeo and Juliette were older pets and they went to the Krauss home to be fostered. Romeo needed to have his eyes evaluated for cataract surgery.

Good news came back that Romeo didn't need the surgery. He started to relax in his foster home and he and Juliette no longer seemed as bonded. We decided that they would do well being adopted separately.

About a year after Romeo had come to Carolina Poodle Rescue, a young couple seeking an older pet saw Romeo on the CPR web site and adopted him into their family. We get pictures of handsome Romeo with his new family, like the ones here of his first trip to the beach. It is wonderful to see him so happy!

Juliette's story can be found in the July 2017 newsletter. To all who helped this fantastic pair of pets along the way, Romeo and Juliette are in wonderful homes because of this group.

Mark Your Calendar -- Carolina Poodle Rescue Reunion

We are hoping to help people plan ahead this year and save the date for the CPR Reunion! If you haven't come to a reunion in the past, you've been missing out! This event is held at Dreamweaver Farms, so it is dog friendly! Adopters and their family members, human and canine, return to the farm to celebrate with CPR staff, volunteers, and other adopters and their dogs.

When: Saturday, October 21, 2017
Where: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet, SC

There will be a delicious lunch, vendors with items for dogs and their people, a silent auction, tours of the farm, and a costume contest for dogs (people can dress up, too). Come meet some fellow adopters, the fantastic staff who provide the care for the CPR dogs, adoption counselors, and many other volunteers who may have helped your dog along his or her way to your home. We will also be holding a raffle to win two nights at the dog-oriented mountain retreat, Barkwells!

So mark your calendars and come join us! We will be sending out an email with further details and RSVP information close to the date.

Ongoing Fundraisers

What better way to spend Labor Day than at a pet friendly condo at Surfside Beach SC - and help CPR help a few pets along the way. Adopters Nikki and Gerald Graydon wanted to thank CPR for the pleasure that their babies, Sadie and Buster bring to them. This week can be yours and while you are soaking up the sun at the beach, you'll also be helping the dogs at Dreamweaver Farm!

The Graydons have generously donated the week of September 9rd - September 15, 2017 to Carolina Poodle Rescue - a $1500 value. The money raised from this raffle will go 100% to CPR. Thank you Nikki and Gerald! The condo is a beautiful 3 bedroom with sleeping accommodations for up to 8 people. The condo is on the 2nd floor and is oceanfront. For more photos and specs on the condo, please visit the full listing at http://www.vrbo.com/553180#

The raffle will end Monday, August 21, 2017! Full details available on this web page.

Rusty--the Little Red Dog (A Rescue Tale)

Rusty--the Little Red Dog is a wonderful children's book about a Carolina Poodle Rescue dog, Rusty, that tells his story. It is a great educational tale about rescues and puppy mills for young children (and for adults who don't know). All profits of the sales for this book go to CPR to help other rescue dogs!

This book would make a wonderful gift to any young children you know, and grandchildren and a great donation to your favorite elementary school, church, hospital, day care, Boy's Club, Girl's Club or any other organization for children. Please consider buying several and sharing them throughout your community. The younger the kids are when they learn about rescue and puppy mills, the more progress we can make toward supporting rescues and stopping puppy mills!

CPR on YouTube!

Want to get to know CPR better? Wish you could see our adoptable dogs in action? Check out our YouTube channel! We regularly upload videos featuring adoptable dogs plus other fun content as time allows. But don't just keep these videos to yourself - make sure to share them with other dog loving family and friends. More and more of our dogs are finding their forever homes thanks to the power of social media. One by one until there are none!

Please Stay in Touch

If you have moved or plan to move in the near feature, please drop a line to CPR and let us know! We don't want to lose touch. Just send an email with your new mailing address and/or email address to melinda.j@carolinapoodlerescue.org. We always love hearing from the CPR community!

And if you have a story about your CPR dog (or cat), we'd love for you to share it--happy homecomings, travel adventures, training achievements, or simply a story that you'd like to share about your CPR family member. Please send it to newsletter@carolinapoodlerescue.org.

Upcoming Events

Come out and support Carolina Poodle Rescue and tell all your friends, too! Even if you can help out for just a few hours at one event, it is a tremendous help! And spread the word about Carolina Poodle Rescue!

Volunteers are needed to help educate people about Carolina Poodle Rescue and the adoption of pets. If you have a CPR foster dog, this is a great opportunity for your foster to browse potential forever families and find the best one for them! Many people think "rescue" dogs were given up because they are "bad" or damaged dogs. They don't always realize how much difference a good home can make and that a lot of the dogs have just had bad luck (perhaps an owner became sick, lost job, etc.). We can show them what wonderful companions are available through rescue. All you need to bring is a chair and a great attitude to share with others! Come prepared for inside or outside depending on the event you are attending.

Please contact the event coordinator if you would like to volunteer or have a foster or two or more to bring!

Do you have a story about a Carolina Poodle Rescue dog that you'd like us to publish? Have you read a book or watched a movie about dogs or dog training that you'd like to review or share?

Please send your stories and/or reviews to newsletter@carolinapoodlerescue.org as well as a photo or photos to go with the story.

If you don't have a story but have a photo you'd like to share of your CPR rescue, we'd love to feature that too!

Tell 5 friends!
Check Carolina Poodle Rescue out on our Facebook page.

Can you tell 5 friends about CPR? Can you Facebook or Twitter a link to our web page? The power of networking is unlimited. Telling 5 friends, and asking them to tell 5 friends, is the best way to reach many people and tell them about the animal rescue, small but determined to make a difference.
 Thank you!

Patrons are our lifeline -- our patrons keep CPR going. Patrons are not only assisting CPR, they are assisting themselves by earning money off their next adoption. For more information on how to become a patron, please email donna@carolinapoodlerescue.org.

When you shop on Amazon, you can also help CPR. Amazon Smile operates EXACTLY like Amazon.com including using the same userid and password. You can designate CPR as your charity and Amazon will donate a percentage of your purchases, behind the scenes, to CPR. It does not change your purchase price.

The site says: "Amazon donates 0.5% of the price of your eligible Amazon Smile purchases to the charitable organization of your choice", that is the purchase price you pay, excluding taxes. It's a really easy way for your regular shopping to help CPR!

One of the best ways to help poodles in need that lets you do it from home is to be an adoption counselor. Do you have 2 to 4 hours per week to give? Do you have an unlimited phone plan? Do you have Word? Do you enjoy talking to other dog-friendly people on the phone? Do you have good instincts about people? If so - adoption counselor work may be for you. For more information, email Sherry Wilson at poodles4ever@bellsouth.net.

With pet health care quality now approaching the same level as human care, there are more options available for the pet owner than ever before. Unfortunately, those options can be expensive. Who wants to make the decision between a few dollars and their beloved companion?

Trupanion offers the only 90% coverage plan for covered items. That's right - 90% coverage with no limit after your deductible is met. 90%. That is the most comprehensive health care plan in the industry.

Carolina Poodle Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Donations are tax-deductible.

Our Mission:
To rescue, rehabilitate, offer permanent sanctuary and, when appropriate, rehome needy poodles and small dogs.

To encourage the human-animal bond by promoting activities that serve to bring animals and their people closer together.

To support the efforts of those in the animal rescue community seeking to end euthanasia as a means of population control.
