Truffles

9/2/09 Well this is the next to last Truffles update, the LAST update from me will be announcing his Adoption! Hopefully very soon … my stodgy older dogs are NOT enjoying him now that he’s healthy and rowdy!
He was neutered yesterday and didn’t slow him down a bit. He’s a headstrong, and physically strong pup!
He lives to adore someone. He will sit with you, walk with you, stand with you ... ANYTHING as long as he is WITH you. He comes when called without fail, walks nicely on a leash, plays with toys. He thinks cats are FUN but not FOOD thankfully. He does his business outside 99.9 % of the time. Crates happily. Likes car rides. Is a bit devilish at times… just a puppy J
He’s the perfect companion doggie. Looking for his forever home. Anyone who adopts him will be very lucky.
8/28/09 Well he got another blood test and ALL of his levels are perfect! So perhaps the vomiting is just run of the mill upset stomach. We will be feeding him 6 small meals, heavy on the rice, he got an injection to settle it down. No extension of his meds, so he’s almost done. And if he doesn’t vomit any more can be neutered Tuesday. We did get some ear drops, heavy on the yeast there. And we will work on that.
8/7/09 Truffles - is doing very well and is eating! Dr. Bryant does not think Truffles had lepto. He thinks he ate something (someone?) who really really didn't agree with him. He'll be up for adoption in a few weeks, but first has to gain weight for neuter surgery.
8/6/09 Terry picked Truffles up earlier today and he's resting tonight at our regular vet here in Spartanburg. Terry says he's very small - more like a moen than a standard even though he's over 15" at the shoulder . We're hoping getting him healthy will help.
Dr. Bryant does NOT think it is lepto but something else - perhaps a toxin. Truffles is getting supportive care and will continue to be monitored at the vet's until levels stabilize and he can come home. It's very reminiscent of Barney - compromised liver function with no known cause so we fight the infection with antiobiotics and hope for the best.
We found out more about Truffles background. He was originally turned into the local shelter with his brother at about 4 months old, no reason given. He and his brother were adopted by a family who bragged about getting such expensive dogs for free. Guess they didn't realize that nothing in life is free and dogs are worth regular well vet visits. Truffles was apparently given to a family member who, as of last week, claimed her dog had died of parvo on the same date that Truffles mysteriously appeared at the shelter doors as a "stray." No known vetting that our super sleuths in Truffles former home town can find. I am simply thankful that we can know get this gentle boy the proper vet care he needs - and find him a home that knows the value of a poodle!
Thanks to everyone for your support for Truffles.
8/3/09 We have a baby standard poodle (approximately 8 - 10 months old) male that has been found as a stray in Elizabeth City NC (not too far from Lumberton NC). He is terribly emaciated, weighing 19.6 lbs this am and standing 18".
Nicknamed Truffles by the local rescue, this young man is in trouble. Per a vet assessment this am, he has been tentatively diagnosed with lepto virus. There has been quite a bit seen in the area. Treatment just for the next two days while we stabilize him to move him is estimated at around $450. That includes this morning's assessment and blood profile. Total treatment is most likely going to run over $1,000.
Our NC vet is going to continuing education Wednesday am for three days . He feels Truffles will need monitoring. He was started this am on iv's and antiobiotics to fight infection and to stabilize him for his move to SC.
