02/06/2010..It's hard to believe that sweet Peyton has been with us for six months now.  Her condition has been diagnosed and it is not good.  Peyton is suffering from epilepsy, cause unknown but most likely caused from a head trauma as a puppy.  15 mg of phenobarbital two times per day are controlling her seizures. However, she is blind with posibly a very small amount of vision and is most likely deaf also.  She can hear her very high pitched sounds but that appears to be all.

Despite her disabilities, she is showing some progress.  She now eats and drinks well thanks to the addition of sationary coop cups in her crate. Now that the bowls don't move around, she can find them easily.  She has friends - specifically Buckwheat and Cher who cuddle with her most days and most nights.  She loves to sleep and cuddle in a pile with her tiny pack.  When I pick Peyton up, she initially struggles then relaxes if I lay her up against my chest.  She seems to take comfort in feeling/hearing a heart.  When the weather is warm, she enjoys being out in the sun.

Peyton still goes in circles but not like she once did . She can often go straight for several feet.  Supporter John Brown made a tunnel for her and she can go through and around her tunnel and seems to enjoy doing that.  (thanks again John). She can actually traverse from one end of our small yard to the other now. She will circle some, but the circles are larger and stem more from her search for the boundaries she knows are there but can not see than from her disabilities.

Living with Peyton is a bit like lving with Helen Keller must have been.  She eats and drinks and she knows you are there but she really doesn't know how to respond.  If someone worked with her daily to stimulate her neurological system as it exists she may improve but she may not.  She is young and healthy otherwise and so we will provide her a safe place to live as long as she has.

8/6/2009....Peyton is not yet ready for adoption. She is suffering from either a neurological disorder or vestibular disease from untreated ear infections. She literally does not know which end is up. Her world has no top and no bottom.  Right now she is in the hands of our caring vet staff.  We will keep you posted.
