Update

February 25, 2011

My mom dragged me back to that ol' doctor on Friday to check out my leg again. I told her there won't nuthin' wrong with my leg and I can run faster than her but she took me anyway. I remembered her chasing me promising to get that doctor to put my leg back crooked when I ran out of the fence so I was prepared to take off as fast as I could from the doctor's office if that was gonna happen. Luckily that Dr. Gallagher is a good doctor and he won't having no part of that.

He just watched me walk even though I wanted to show him how I could run. He took some pictures of my leg and felt it and bent it all around. Then he wrote his report that said "Improved patella location and stability with excellent function". Note that EXCELLENT part. I knew I was excellent ! He said I still had some patellae mildly "off" but since I ain't showing like nuthin' is wrong to just leave it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it ! Maybe when I'm an old lady I'll have to have that luxating patella surgery that my old sistah had but I got a long time before then ! I got so strong in that leg that I even bent the pin in my knee. The doctor wasn't concerned about that at all. He was glad I'm using that leg.

Stella is visiting me this week while her mama is out of town. I told her all about Dr. Gallagher and how good he fixed my leg. We gonna try to raise some money so he can fix Stella too. She's got 2 bad legs ! So I wanted to let you all know how well I'm doing and thank you for all you did to get my leg fixed. I hope you can help Stella too. That would be really cool if next time Stella visits me, we could run together !

My mom wanted me to send these pictures of my xrays so you could see the before and after. She is fascinated by it for some reason. It just makes me hungry looking at all those bones...........

BTW, I can run so fast now, I ran that ol' cat Oreo away from home for a month ! Mama was upset and he finally came back. Hehehehe

As you remember I had my leg surgery a couple of months ago. It was the best thing ever !! I wouldn't keep the bandage on and I refused to "take it easy". After all, I am a puppy and it's my life mission to play. My recovery period has been really tough. It has consisted of having to sleep in the big girl bed with my sisters and mom and dad every night since the surgery and swimming at the beach on Labor Day. You can see from the photos how rough it has been.

My surgery musta been good for me as I've grown a lot since it. I used to be 2 lbs. and now I'm close to 8 lbs. I am bigger than all my sisters and really close to being as big as that ol' cat Oreo. I play with Oreo now and I can outrun him with no problem. I even jump on him sometimes ! My mom says if everyone hadn't made it possible for me to have my surgery that as much as I've grown, that leg would have grown like a curly-cue and been worthless to me. I don't know what she means. There's nothing wrong with my leg. I run and play with my BFF Cookie all the time. I don't even have that chicken leg anymore. I don't even remember that I used to hold my hind leg up and not put weight on it. I stand on my back legs now and put my front legs on my mom's knee when she's working at the computer to let her know that it's been 10 minutes since she gave me hugs. I am even learning to dance in circles !

I went back to the doc Oct. 8 for a check up on my leg. He said "Hannah is doing terrific! She has excellent weight-bearing on her left hindlimb and her patella is central and stable through range-of-motion." All that medical stuff ! I have to go back again in February, when I'm not growing anymore and see how I'm doing then. A couple of weeks ago, I started standing on my hind legs and it must be a really good trick cause my mom got so excited. I have never been able to do that my whole life before. I think soon I'll be jumping up on furniture and if I keep growing I may be able to do some table surfing. I hear that is really fun !

I want to thank everyone for everything they have done to help me through this.

8/13/10 After Surgery Update

Hey there! It's me, Hannah again. I just wanted to update you on my bum leg, as they call it. I had surgery yesterday. It was as easy as pie. I'm a tough little girl and I didn't cry a bit. I had to spend the night at the doctor though. They were nice but I like my own bed and I missed my buddy Cookie. I was glad to come home today. I was successful in getting the bandage off and was starting to work on those itchy stitches in my leg but I got caught! Back to the vet we went and this time instead of a little clear E-collar, I got this big blue one. I don't like it much.

The doctor changed his plan once he saw the inside of my knee. He ended up cutting the bone and moving it and putting this big ol' pin in my leg. He hopes this will help keep the kneecap where it's supposed to be. There is no groove in my leg for the kneecap so I may have to have that surgery later. I have to be on a leash outside cause I try to run around too much and I'm not supposed to go up stairs but when I get the chance, I go down the one to the sunken living room before my mom sees. She thinks that I am going to be kept quiet for the next 8 weeks. Hahahahaa! I get my itchy stitches out in 10 days if I don't do it before then. In 8 weeks, I go back to the surgeon for him to take yet another picture of my leg and tell me how it's doing. I already know it's doing just fine!

I'm gonna take a puppy nap now. I'm still a little tired from all the hoopla. Tomorrow morning, I'll be ready and raring to go!

UPDATE

Hello All,

Your response to help little Hannah has been wonderful! We wanted to let you know that we have reached our goal for her surgery. On Thursday, August 12, Hannah has an appointment for her surgery. It is possible that she may require a 2nd surgery if the first one doesn't take. We are hopeful that the first one will work. We will certainly update you after the surgery and let you know how it goes.

Again, thank you very much for your support for Hannah!

Hi, my name is Hannah and they tell me I’m a  chocolate cocka-poo.  But look at my picture, I think I’m very poodley.  Anyway I am 4 ½ months old and I was born with a bum knee.  I live with my foster mom and dad and 3 other 5 lb. poodles.  My mom says I’m very smart considering I may have some cocker blood in me.  I already know how to sit and wait for my puppy treat when I come inside from potty time.  And I come when called sometimes if I’m not playing with Oreo the cat.  I’m a very sweet girl and like belly rubs and puppy kisses and snuggles.  Because of my bum knee, I currently walk with a limp because I can’t put much weight on it.  I’ve already been moved once because my first parents could not handle my bum leg, they called it a deformity and said they can’t make no money from a puppy with deformities. Fooey on them. I ain’t even sure what a deformity is. I hop along just fine.  Luckily the Fairy Dogmother got me to a foster home where I am loved.

The doc says my kneecap is 90 degrees off of where it should be so that it’s on the inside of my leg and makes me have one bow-leg.  He calls it a distal femoral varus and proximal tibia valgus deformity.  I’m not sure what all that means but I do know that I don’t walk the same as my foster sister, Cookie. I sure wish I could run and catch her.  I love to play but she out runs me every time.  They took some x-rays 2 weeks ago and then just took some more.  Even in the two weeks in between, you can see a big difference in my bones. I think I am getting worse.  I got energy and spunk but I can’t keep up with my foster sisters. Even Oreo the cat beats me up with this old knee holding me back.  One day when I have a new leg I am gonna get that ole cat.  The knee cap being in the wrong place is causing my bones to grow twisted.  The doc says the only hope I have for keeping up with my foster sisters is surgery before the leg continues to grow twisted even more. He says that he can correct my bum knee before it grows worse and then I will be able to put weight on it when I play and run. Maybe I will out run Cookie with a new knee.    Even though I know I will be loved and keep my spunk, I don’t like the other option doc mentioned which is to let my bum leg continue to grow crooked until I get to be a big doggie.   Then at some point, the crooked leg will be a hindrance and have to be amputated.  My foster mom says it will cost about $1800 for a surgery to try to fix my leg now before it gets worse.  I don’t know how many puppy treats that is but I think I’m worth it!  Can you help me get my leg fixed so I can keep up with my sisters and that ole cat?
