Unfortuanely, Capt Jack's leg will be amputated later today or first thing in the am. We have been fighting that infection on his leg and are unable to make it go away. Best course at this time for him.
Say prayers for our surgeon's skill and for Capt Jack's final speedy recovery.

A stray, found on the outer banks area of North Carolina. Black male standard poodle, about 3 to 7 years old. He is very sweet and affectionate despite the pain he has been in. Captain Jack was found on Friday the 13th just outside of Tabor City NC. His finder knew that something was badly wrong but did not have the funds to take him to a vet so called us and met kennel manager Leanne Brown on Sunday.

We had him into our vet at 8 am Monday. His leg was completely broken - Dr. Bryant used the term "crystalized" to describe the many, many points where bone met car and shattered. Dr. Bryant had him in surgery by lunch that day as time is of the essence when dealing with breaks of this magnitude.

Despite his pain, he's been a complacent and happy patient. He is on crate rest for at least 20 hours per day, with limited time to interact and socialize. He has a big wire crate on our porch where he can at least watch the world go by. In two more weeks, the pins and wires holding his fractured bones will be removed. We will be holding our breaths to see if the leg will heal at least correctly enough for Captain Jack to be able to walk again.
