July 8, 2009 UPDATE

Barney’s Vet visit started off kind of bad.  When the Vet came in I asked him how Barney was doing. He looked at his blood work from today and said not good not good at all.  But then he looked at the B/W from 6/15/09 and said well let me back up. He has improved a lot and added 7 pounds of weight but the numbers are still out of line.  He gave Barney another prescription of Liver Meds, some antibiotics, and Medicine for his ear infections.

Of course we went to Petsmart for new squeaky balls and he charmed everyone he saw.

June UPDATE

Barney went for his ultrasound this afternoon to determine if removal of the gall bladder would resolve his stone issue.

Well.....there were no gall bladder stones. Or kidney stones. Or anything. There was some crystallized debris either in the bladder or kidney's, forgot which Dr. Hill said. But everything that the bloodwork is pointing to is now negated by the ultrasound.

Dr. Hill was repeating the bloodwork this afternoon. Barney is still very weak and is still on iv's and massive antiobiotics. He doesn't really have an infection as his white blood count is not out of line as it should be but the antiobiotics seem to be helping. He is not by any means out of the woods but at this point, surgery isn't necessary because there is nothing that can be seen on ultrasound or x ray that needs removed.

In other words - we don't know at this point what is wrong with Barney. He'll be hospitalized through the weekend so supportive care can be offered. Then we'll go from there.

For those of you who have sent in donations so far - thank you! Just this week will most likely cost us over $1,000 so not a penny will be wasted (and that figure is with some pretty good discounts).

I have decided if we ever figure out what is bugging Barney then we'll call it just that - Barney's bug.

This is Barney - a brown standard poodle 5 years old. Barney has been with us since February. His previous owner's had 5 kids and the owner thought his grumpiness had to do with too many kids, too much activity so she turned him in to us.

Once he got here, Barney kept losing weight and we could not figure out why. I blamed food allergies and we did all the normal testing.

It wasn't food. Barney has gall bladder stones. He is heading for an ultrasound to determine the extent of the damage and then, hopefully he will be healthy enough, surgery. Barney is down to 30 lbs so he is weak and may not make it through. Surgery is several thousand dollars. Most likely many of his behavior problems stemmed from simply not feeling good.

Barney loves tennis balls, lounging on the couch, going for rides in the car, long walks and sitting with his head in his person's lap. He is house trained and crate trained. He loves to run in the pasture and is gentle with little dogs. He has a lot of love to give. I do not want to see him die.
Barney is originally from Nashville TN.
